On the 13th June 36 Year 8 students took part in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) challenge day in partnership with the Institution for Engineering & Technology (IET) and Arconic aerospace engineers.
The students were a real credit to the school as they worked together in teams to develop, model and test ideas for a new attraction in Thorpe Park.
A number of interesting solutions to the challenges were worked on, some of them working fantastically!
The teams were able to develop and model new rides, themed restaurants and an escape room. Points were awarded for team work, well-functioning designs, managing a budget and presenting ideas with clarity and detail.
The winning team comprised of Megan Green, Brad Finnemore, Isla Berman, Isha Limbachia, Sayuni Jayakodi and Charley Lattimore. They each won a £10 Amazon gift voucher.
We are very thankful to the IET and the Arconic for their involvement, enthusiasm and expertise. We hope the event was helpful for the students develop resilience, teamwork and designing skills. One of the key purposes of the challenge day was to inspire students to consider further study and careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. Well done to all those who took part and many thanks to all the staff who helped in different ways to make the day enjoyable and fruitful.
